such as Charles-Michel de l'Épée or Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, are often incorrectly referred to as"inventors" of sign language.

founded a school for the deaf in 1857 in Washington, D.C., which in 1864 became the National Deaf-Mute College.

who was valedictorian of his graduating class at Gallaudet in 1896, himself is corroborating Hubbard's claim-
that Merrill remembers Hubbard using the huddle- or was simply pointing out the news report to Hubbard.
