Scrapers/small excavators take non-excavating bites and remove algae, sediment and other material by closely cropping or scraping the reef surface,
leaving shallow scrape marks on the reef Substratum.
An interesting ecological note for brain corals is that by killing off the living coral, the disease can annually convert about 4% of coral area to free space,
thus creating new substrata for successional processes.
