Have you ever stood up to
a speaker at a public event and challenged their Singlism?
Singles are also likely to face social stigma due to their solo status,
a phenomenon psychologist Bella DePaulo has called“Singlism.”.
In the U.S., every single person has experienced Singlism, because it is written right into the laws of the land.
Singlism(my term for the stereotyping and stigmatizing of people who are single)
and matrimania(the over-the-top hyping of weddings and couples) make up our cultural wallpaper.
Have you held political leaders(or other people in power)
to account for their Singlism or thanked them for their actions and policies that are fair to single people?
Have you knocked on doors, handed out pamphlets, given to advocacy groups(name your favorites), volunteered your time,
or done anything else to raise consciousness or stamp out Singlism?
Have you ever written a letter to an
editor, author, reporter, social scientist, or anyone else pointing out an act of Singlism and explaining what is wrong with it?
Over the many years that I have been studying the stereotyping, stigmatizing,
and discrimination against single people that I call Singlism, I have heard from single people who claim
that they have never experienced Singlism.
