Rapidly progressive dementias and the treatment of human prion diseases.
A new or new variant prion, called nCJD or nvCJD, is recognised.
Not all Prions are bad, but some develop an abnormality in their shapes.
However, Prions, such as those associated with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease,
may not be destroyed by autoclaving at the typical 134 °C for three minutes or 121 °C for 15 minutes.
Synthetic(recombinant or cell-clone) human immunoglobulins can now be made,
and for several reasons(including the risk of prion contamination of biological materials) are likely to be used more and more often.
These proteins are abnormally folded and, when they come in contact with similar normal proteins,
turn them into Prions like themselves, setting off a chain reaction that eventually riddles the brain with holes.
However, Prions, such as those associated with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease,
and some toxins released by certain bacteria, such as Cereulide, may not be destroyed by autoclaving at the typical 134 °C for three minutes or 121 °C for 15 minutes.
