The Montgolfier brothers designed the first passenger-
carrying hot- air balloon.
Seventy years after that, the Montgolfier brothers took up the task of perfecting hot-air balloons.
Procure me immediately some taffeta and rope, and i will show you something that will astonish the world!” - joseph-
michel Montgolfier, 1782.
Not quite understanding what was happening, he believed that the smoke had a special gas in it-
which he named after himself, Montgolfier Gas.
After months of tests, two well-to-do paper manufacturing brothers-
Joseph-Michael and Jacques-Ètienne Montgolfier- were ready to debut their“lighter-than-air” balloon,
which was to be launched with puffs of heated air.
The discovery of hydrogen gas in the 18th century led to the invention of the hydrogen balloon,
at almost exactly the same time that the Montgolfier brothers rediscovered the hot-air balloon and began manned flights.
