So I decided to retrace Hiram Bingham's incredible 1911
Yale Peruvian Expedition on which he located the ruins of Machu Picchu.
At that time Machu Picchu had roughly the same status for travel magazines
as pre-scandal Tiger Woods did for Golf Digest.
The Incas worshipped nature and the
sun in particular, and the architecture at Machu Picchu is fully integrated with its environment.
And many destinations(like Halong Bay, the Galápagos Islands,
the Serengeti, Machu Picchu, Antartica,
Everest) are virtually inaccessible without an organized group tour!
Most people flock here to hike the Inca Trail and see Machu Picchu and let everything else take a back seat.
Because the Incas left behind so little hard information,
we will probably never know for certain exactly why Machu Picchu was built.
