This year, the worst-affected of the 36 districts is Katni with 305 villages experiencing water crisis.
By Rail: Katni has a railway station, which is termed as one of the
largest and busiest railway junctions of the country.
On 16 January 1995 the first regularly scheduled services using the 2 × 25
kV system of traction started on Bina- Katni.
The district is surrounded by Sagar in the west, Narsinghpur &
Jabalpur in the South, Chhatarpur in the North, Panna & Katni in the east.
This train is hauled by BRC WAP 5 or
WAP 4E in Indore-New Katni Junction section,
then from New Katni Junction to Allahabad by KTE WDM2a/3a, and from Allahabad to Howrah by HWH WAP 4.
Umaria is famous for its coal-mines, which were opened in 1881 by the Government of India and transferred to the Rewa Darbar in the same year,
mainly to meet the requirement of railway at Katni.
