Approximately 75 percent of the population of
770,000 follow either the Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school, the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism
or another school of Buddhism.
In an interview with this reporter last year before he left for the US, the Karmapa had openly spoken about his unhappiness over the manner in which the Indian government and intelligence agencies had treated him these past several years,
refusing to believe that he was the real leader of the Karma Kagyu sect.
