What was remarkable about Deborah and Jael?
Can Jael's action be called treachery?
How did Deborah, Barak, and Jael show courage?
Jael was courageous and strong.
Jael then came on out to meet Barak
And Jael went out to meet Sisera,
Jael went out to meet Sisera,
But Jael, Heber's wife, picked up a tent stake and a hammer.
Among these were Gideon, Barak, Deborah, Daniel, Esther, Jeremiah,
Abigail, and Jael- to name just a few.
What a contrast that would have been to Jael's courageous action described in the very next verses! -
Judg.
Jael invited weary Sisera into her tent,
gave him milk to drink, and covered him, so that he fell asleep.
Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be,
blessed shall she be above women in the tent.
Sisera fled to the tent of Jael, but as he slept, she had the courage to kill him by driving
Jael then came on out to meet Barak and said to him:“ Come and
I shall show you the man you are looking for.”.
Because Deborah, Barak, and Jael courageously trusted in God,
Israel“ had no further disturbance for forty years.” - Judges 4: 1- 22; 5: 31.
As Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come,
and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest.
Sisera fled to the tent of Jael, but as he slept, she had the courage to kill him by driving
a tent pin through his temples.
Jael then“ proceeded to take a pin of the tent
and to put the hammer into her hand,” things that a tent dweller would use regularly.
Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him,"Turn in,
my lord, turn in to me; don't be afraid." He came in to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.
And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn
in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered him with a mantle.
As Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said to him,"Come,
and I will show you the man whom you seek." He came to her; and behold, Sisera lay dead, and the tent peg was in his temples.
As Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come,
and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples.
Then Jael Heber's wife took a nail of the tent,
and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.
Then Jael Heber's wife took a tent peg, and took
a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him, and struck the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground; for he was in a deep sleep; so he swooned and died.
