Hypocalcemia, some drugs, certain genetic abnormalities.
Hypocalcemia may be seen in 27% of patients.
It is a metabolic
disease caused by a low blood calcium level(hypocalcaemia).
Hypocalcemia, commonly known as calcium deficiency disease, occurs when
calcium levels in the blood are low.
Uncontrolled Hypocalcemia- a decrease in the level of calcium ions
in the blood below the normal value.
Hypocalcemia most often occurs in newborns,
either within the first two days of life or after five to 10 days.
Because Hypocalcemia can be difficult to identify,
particularly in infants, you may not notice it until the onset of these serious symptoms.
Although these symptoms could be attributable to anything,
they more substantively indicate Hypocalcemia in the presence of associated physiological or neurological symptoms.
However, it should never be used for treating lead or
other heavy metal poisoning in children because it induces Hypocalcemia, which can lead to tetany and death(7).
Since the anticoagulant is returned to the donor along with blood components that are not being collected,
it can bind the calcium in the donor's blood and cause Hypocalcemia.
