In visceral disease,
bone-marrow aspiration is the safest technique, although Splenic aspiration may be used in difficult cases.
Splenic dysfunction, leading to the presence of Howell-Jolly bodies on blood smear,
occurs in 24% of people with amyloidosis.
At-risk children aged over 2 years and
under the age of 5 years who have asplenia or Splenic dysfunction, or who are immunocompromised,
require one dose of PCV13 followed by the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine(PPV23) at least two months after.
