India takes a baby step in developing Scramjet engine: ISRO official.
The Scramjet flight test vehicle was designated X-51 on
27 September 2005.
The Scramjet engine is used only during the atmospheric phase of the rocket's flight.
Indian Space Research Organisation,
ISRO successfully tested two indigenously developed Scramjet engines on the 28th August.
During the cruise stage of flight the missile will be propelled by a Scramjet airbreathing jet engine.
Ramjet, Scramjet and Dual Mode Ramjet(DMRJ)
are the three concepts of air-breathing engines which are being developed by various space agencies.
A Scramjet(supersonic combustion ramjet)
is a variant of a ramjet airbreathing jet engine in which combustion takes place in supersonic airflow.
All Scramjet engines have an intake which compresses the incoming air,
fuel injectors, a combustion chamber, and a divergent thrust nozzle.
After a smooth countdown of 12 hours,
the solid rocket booster carrying the Scramjet Engines lifted off at 0600 hrs(6:00 am) IST.
Initial flight testing is aimed at validating the aerodynamics of the air vehicle,
as well as its thermal properties and Scramjet engine performance.
The Defense Research and Development Laboratory's Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle(HSTDV)
is intended to attain autonomous Scramjet flight for 20 seconds,
using a solid rocket launch booster.
Once the second stage reached the desired conditions for engine“Start-up”,
necessary actions were initiated to ignite the Scramjet engines and they functioned for about 5 seconds.
Two Scramjet engines were“hugging” the rocket on its sides and
when the rocket reaches a height of 11 km the Scramjet engines would start breathing air.
He said the two air breathing engines were like hugging the rocket on its sides and
normally when the rocket reaches a height of 11 km the Scramjet engines would start breathing air.
As in ramjets, a Scramjet relies on high vehicle speed to compress the incoming air forcefully before combustion(hence ramjet), but whereas a ramjet decelerates the air to subsonic velocities before combustion, the airflow in a Scramjet is supersonic throughout the entire engine.
The implementation of this quality will be available due to the presence of a system for regulating the supply of a gas generator to the engine's combustion chamber,
which ensures maximum Scramjet thrust on approach to the target,
and, consequently, higher available overloads(35-40 units) during missile defense maneuvers.
