Prilocaine topical is a local anesthetic(numbing medication).
Emla cream(this also contains another local anaesthetic called Prilocaine).
Propylamine base- o C amide hydrochloride; Prilocaine hydrochloride; Prilocaine hydrochloride.
EMLA® cream- consists of a mixture of local anaesthetics(lidocaine and Prilocaine).
Topical anesthetic treatments such as Prilocaine, lidocaine, benzocaine,
or tetracaine can also relieve itching and pain.
Usage: Prilocaine topical may also be used for
other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
It is also often
combined with lidocaine as a preparation for dermal anesthesia(lidocaine/Prilocaine or EMLA), for treatment of conditions like paresthesia.
In some patients, a metabolite of Prilocaine may cause the unusual side effect of methemoglobinemia,
which may be treated with methylene blue.
Like other local anesthetics(such as mepivacaine, and Prilocaine), procaine is a vasodilator,
thus is often coadministered with epinephrine for the purpose of vasoconstriction.
