Melchizedek was not descended from Levi, but he collected a
tenth from Abraham and blessed him, the man who received God's promises.
Melchizedek had been king of ancient Salem,
which evidently was on the site where later the city Jerusalem( a name incorporating“ Salem”) was built.
After giving him the food, Melchizedek helped Abraham spiritually too-
not by preaching to him, but by praising God for Abraham's victory- in two brief sentences.

that he was exhausted and needed food, and that he was in danger of covetousness and of pride?

paid tithes to Melchizedek in Abraham(Genesis 14:20;
Hebrews 7:4- 9), even though Levi was not born until hundreds of years later.
