Two years after the Supreme Court order, the central government announced
on September 13, 2017 that the Chakma and Hajong refugees would be granted“limited citizenship”.
A number of minor tribes live in Meghalaya, including Hajong( 31,381-
97.23% Hindu), Koch( 21,381- 98.53% Hindu), Rabha( 28,153- 94.60% Hindu), Mikir( 11,399- 52% Christian and 30% Hindu), Tiwa( Lalung)( 8,438- 96.15% Christian) and Biate10,085- 97.3% Christian.
After its members attended the 5th Joint High Powered Committee meeting on the refugee issue, the union on Friday issued a press statement in which it also demanded that there
should be no fresh enrollment of Chakma and Hajong in the electoral rolls.
