Gershoff and Grogan-Kaylor tested some of the long-term effects of some adults
who were spanked when they were young.
We as a
society think of spanking and physical abuse as distinct behaviors," said Gershoff, who previously taught at U-M.
Gershoff examined hundreds of studies
and presented the results of meta-analyses of the association between parental physical punishment and child and adult outcomes.
Gershoff(1,4) also summarized the various demographic and risk factors which are
more likely to be associated with use of physical punishment: being single, separated, or divorced;

Gershoff says this persistence of spanking occurs in spite
of no clear evidence of positive effects, and in fact with ample evidence that it is detrimental to a child's behavior and development.
Gershoff and co-author Andrew Grogan-Kaylor,
associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work, found that spanking(defined as an open-handed hit on the behind or extremities) was significantly linked to detrimental outcomes.
As part of this report Elizabeth Gershoff at the University of Texas at Austin, presented an analysis of 27 different
studies that looked at the effect of physical punishment on the later behavior of children.
Gershoff notes that this persistence of spanking is in spite
of the fact that there is no clear evidence of its positive effects and ample evidence abound that it poses a risk of harm to children's behaviour and development.
