Berns, are you also mad at your Papa?
The Berns' lab is currently exploring
the ability of dogs to process and understand human language.
Besides his parents, Sam's survivors include his grandparents,
Alice and Lewis Berns and Barbara and Burt Gordon.
Berns heads up the Dog Project in Emory's psychology department,
which researches questions surrounding man's best and oldest friend.

We found that the caudate response of each dog in the first
experiment correlated with their choices in the second experiment,” Berns said.

The Berns Salonger with its restaurant and stages is also a notable expression of the new civic pride, as immortalised in August Strindberg's novel
The Red Room.
Gordon founded PRF in 1999 with her husband Scott Berns, MD, MPH,
a pediatric emergency physician and faculty member at Brown University, after their son, Sam, was diagnosed with the disease.
The US neuroscientist Gregory Berns, however, believes that the problem of animal consciousness has been overstated,
and that emerging brain science and MRI technology could go a long way towards getting us inside the minds of other creatures.
In his lab at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, Berns and a volunteer team of dog owners train
their canine companions to become comfortable inside MRI machines so that they can be scanned safely in a relaxed, conscious state.
By reading their brain activity and
using our understanding of the human brain for reference, Berns believes that he can glean a wide range
of insights about the experience of dogs, including the range of their emotions, the diversity of their personalities, and even whether they can differentiate between two- and three-dimensional images.
