Since its first historical eruption in 1772, in which a catastrophic debris avalanche destroyed 40 villages,
only two small Phreatic eruptions have occurred from vents in the NE-flank fumarole field,
Kawah Mas.
On 14 January PHIVOLCS raised the Alert Level
to 3, noting a marked increase in activity characterized by three Phreatic eruptions and 158 rockfall events
between 1621 on 13 January and 1925 on 14 January.
