Mcmurdo Station Amundsen- Scott South Pole Station.
The US research station there is named Mcmurdo Station.
And this is the scene that greets you in Mcmurdo.
Antarctica also has a nuclear power station named Mcmurdo Station.
Mcmurdo STATION, ANTARCTICA--Ever since we first
conceived of this project, the logistics have been complex.
The ship also provided a six-hour familiarization cruise in Mcmurdo Sound to 156 randomly selected station personnel.
Our science aircraft is at the oldest Mcmurdo facility, Willy Field,
a fully functional snow-covered airport complete with a control tower.
The name of Antarctica takes
care of the icy mountains floating in the sea, but the Mcmurdo Dry Valley is a snow-free area.
This is Mcmurdo itself. About a thousand people work here in summer,
and about 200 in winter when it's completely dark for six months.

and other scientific research stations on Antarctica resemble the popular conception of an arcology as a technologically advanced, relatively self-sufficient human community.
Each year, the Polar Star crew creates a navigable channel through seasonal and multiyear ice, sometimes as much as 21′ thick,
to allow refuel and resupply ships to reach Mcmurdo Station.
