    Having volunteered at HVO myself 10 years ago during a volcanic crisis situation, the best that any of the observatory staff can do is to look at the activity from the past week, look also at what Kilauea historically has done in terms of eruption activity, and then consider the most likely scenarios.

    As someone who was volunteering at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory back in 2008 when Crater Rim Drive beyond the Jagger Museum had to be closed due to the high levels of volcanic gas emissions, and then witnessing the Overlook Vent within Halema'uma'u Crater coming into being, the rapid changes at the summit of Kilauea volcano from the past few months are astounding!

    The two explosive eruptions at the summit of Kilauea this week were caused by a different mechanism, which was the level of the lava lake dropping within the Overlook Crater to below the level of the water table in the ground, bringing the hot lava in contact with cold water, causing instant flashing of this water to steam, and upward increase of pressure.

    I have to point out though that these green, flame retardant flight suits, flame retardant gloves, and the white helmets are specifically for fieldwork that involves getting to remote locations via helicopter(and this I know, because I had to take a half day's worth of flight safety training courses and then wear this exact kit for fieldwork via helicopter with the USGS's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Kilauea team!)!
