Rāvūri Bharadvāja(1927- 18 October 2013) was a Jnanpith award winning Telugu novelist,
short-story writer, poet and critic.
He was a recipient of 1998 Jnanpith award, 1974 Padma Shri
and 1992 Padma Bhushan award for literature.
Malayalam poet Akkitham wins 55th Jnanpith Award- Malayalam poet Akkitham has
been chosen for 55th Jnanpith Award for the year 2019.
Initially English language was not considered for the Award but
after 49th Jnanpith Award, English language was added to the list of languages for consideration.
Via this award, the Bhartiya Jnanpith recognises Indian litterateurs who write in one
of the 22 Indian languages listed in the Schedule Eight of the Indian Constitution.
On 14th December 2018, Jnanpith Selection Board chaired by eminent novelist,
scholar and Jnanpith laureate Pratibha Ray selected Renowned
English writer Amitav Ghosh for the prestigious Jnanpith Award 2018.
Kannada writer and Jnanpith awardee Chandrashekhara Kambara has been
elected president of Sahitya Akademi, defeating his nearest rival, Odiya novelist and another Jnanpith recipient Pratibha Ray, by 27 votes.
Incidentally, this week also marks the golden jubilee of Kuvempu's Jnanpith Award, and his birthplace is the site of a two-day symposium(December 29,
30) where scholars will discuss the significance of Kuvempu's work.
