Finally, after years of negotiations, Gjerde and her allies won at least some protection for the Sargasso.
Gjerde, who participated in the meetings,
says the agreement shows that countries finally recognize that it will take an international legally binding agreement to ensure meaningful protections.
In 2010, Kristina Gjerde, high seas policy adviser for the International
Union for Conservation of Nature's Global Marine and Polar Programme, helped set up the Sargasso Sea Alliance to protect this vulnerable ecosystem.
