People were given several weeks to exchange their Demonetized currency for new notes at banks.
In other words 98.7% of the Demonetized Rs 1000 notes are back into the banks.
When a legal tender is Demonetized by the government, it becomes scrap instantly,
losing its worth in the market.
On 8 November 2016, India Demonetized high denomination currency, wiping out 86
per cent of the currency in circulation.
Two years and a few months after this move, only 0.7 percent of Demonetized notes have not been returned to banks.
However, no positive intervention was taken up in this regard, other than
to allow farmers to purchase some inputs like seeds from public sector bodies using Demonetized notes.
