    Said he,'Did I not say that thou Couldst never bear with me patiently?

    He said: Did I not tell thee that thou Couldst not bear with me?

    (26) And if thou Couldst only see when they are made to stand before the Fire!

    If only thou Couldst see when the guilty ones will bend low their heads before their Lord,(saying:)“Our Lord!

    Couldst thou but see when they are terrified with no escape, and are seized from near at hand.

    Seest thou such a one as taketh for his god his own passion(or impulse)? Couldst thou be a disposer of affairs for him?

    Said he,'This is the parting between me and thee. Now I will tell thee the interpretation of that thou Couldst not bear patiently.

    He said: This is the parting between thee and me! I will announce unto thee the interpretation of that thou Couldst not bear with patience.

    And Couldst thou see the time when they shall be terrified! Then there shall be no escaping, and they shall be laid hold of from a place quite nigh.

    If thou Couldst see when they are stationed before their Lord! He will say,'Is not this the truth?' They will say,'Yes indeed, by our Lord!' He will say,'Then taste the chastisement for your unbelief.

    Couldst thou but see when the guilty hang their heads before their Lord,(and say): Our Lord! We have now seen and heard, so send us back; we will do right, now we are sure.

    Couldst thou but see when the culprits shall hang their heads before their Lord, saying: our Lord! we have now seen and heard; so send us back; we shall work righteously, verily we are convinced.

    And(moreover) He hath put affection between their hearts: not if thou hadst spent all that is in the earth, Couldst thou have produced that affection, but Allah hath done it: for He is Exalted in might, Wise.

    If thou Couldst but see when they are confronted with their Lord! He will say:"Is not this the truth?" They will say:"Yea, by our Lord!" He will say:"Taste ye then the penalty, because ye rejected Faith.

    If thou Couldst but see when they are confronted with the Fire! They will say:"Would that we were but sent back! Then would we not reject the signs of our Lord, but would be amongst those who believe!

    If thou Couldst see when they are set before their Lord! He will say: Is not this real? They will say: Yea, verily, by our Lord! He will say: Taste now the retribution for that ye used to disbelieve.

    And Couldst thou see what time they shall be held before their Lord? He will say: is this not real? They will say: aye! by our Lord! He will say: taste then the torment for ye have been disbelieving.

    If only thou Couldst see when the guilty ones will bend low their heads before their Lord,(saying:)"Our Lord! We have seen and we have heard: Now then send us back(to the world): we will work righteousness: for we do indeed(now) believe.

    And Couldst thou see what time they shall be held over the Fire, and then they will say: would that we were sent back and now we shall not belie the signs of our Lord and we shall be of the believers.

    As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan lads in the city, and under it was a treasure belonging to them. Their father was a righteous man; and thy Lord desired that they should come of age and then bring forth their treasure as a mercy from thy Lord. I did it not of my own bidding. This is the interpretation of that thou Couldst not bear patiently.

    And those who disbelieve say: we shall by no means believe in this Qur'an nor in that which hath been before it. Would that thou Couldst see when the wrong-doers shall be made to stand before their Lord! They shall cast back the word one to another; those who were deemed weak will say Unto those who were stiff-necked: had it not been for you, surely we should have been believers.

    And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them, and their father had been righteous, and thy Lord intended that they should come to their full strength and should bring forth their treasure as a mercy from their Lord; and I did it not upon my own command. Such is the interpretation of that wherewith thou Couldst not bear.
