Chlordiazepoxide, a benzodiazepine medication, is frequently used for detoxification(detox).
Alcohol- Chlordiazepoxide is normally used to help at first with acute withdrawal.
Please also be aware that the effects of Chlordiazepoxide can last into the following day.
Chlordiazepoxide works by affecting the way certain substances in your brain(called neurotransmitters)
pass messages to your brain cells.
Benzodiazepines such as Chlordiazepoxide(Librium), diazepam(Valium),
lorazepam(Ativan) or oxazepam(Serax) are the most commonly used drugs used to reduce alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
For mild/moderate alcohol detoxification in secondary care,
some hospitals have a system whereby regular reducing doses of Chlordiazepoxide are not given due to concerns about sedative effects.
A doctor usually prescribes a high dose of medication such as Chlordiazepoxide or diazepam(normally used by a specialist doctor in hospital)
for the first day that you stop drinking alcohol.
