In Mizoram, too, about 10,000 Chakmas(Buddhists) who have fled persecution in Bangladesh
will become Indian citizens.
Hill districts were
home to a predominantly Tibeto-Burman population, including groups like the Chakmas, Mizos, Nagas, Garos and Bodos.
On the other hand, people who should be considered as
citizens by birth according to the Citizenship Act, including the Chakmas, Hajongs, Tibetans, and
many migrants originating from Bangladesh are still denied citizenship.
