On 15 January 1949, General K M Cariappa was appointed the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian army.
The main parade is held at Cariappa Parade ground in Delhi,
Bravery awards and Sena medals are also distributed on this day.
Cariappa's health began to deteriorate in 1991, and two years later,
he breathed his last in Bengaluru at the age of 94.
After repatriation K C Cariappa went on to helicopters for a short while,
commanding No.111 Helicopter Unit at Hasimara during the 1971 War.
Cariappa, the senior most Indian officer, hosted a farewell party,
for colleagues who had opted for Pakistan at the time of the partition.
During the World War- II, Field Marshal Cariappa actively served in Iraq,
Iran and Syria in 1941- 1942 and then in Burma in 1943- 1944.
In the four-page typed note, Cariappa also advocated scrapping the Constitution,
all political parties and linguistic states, and restricting adult franchise on the basis of“literacy”.
Army Day is celebrated on 15 January every year in India,
in recognition of Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa's(then a Lieutenant General)
taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India, on 15 January 1949.
