So Joseph settled his family in Galilee, outside of Archelaus' jurisdiction. - Matthew 2: 22.
After the expulsion of Archelaus from Judea, the city became the official residence of the Roman procurator.
Then, hearing that Archelaus reigned in Judea in place of his father Herod,
he was afraid to go there.
Joseph had no fear of the dead King Herod. However, Joseph was afraid of what Herod's tyrannical son, Archelaus, could do.
Together they told Caesar of the time that Archelaus had killed 3,000 Jews during Passover,
heaping up their bodies in the temple before torturing others.
When King Herod the Great died,
his kingdom was divided up, and Archelaus was given half of the territory,
but the title of king was not given to him.
To his surprise, when he got to Rome a delegation of his own family plus fifty Jews and Samaritans,
had traveled by a different route and opposed the request of Archelaus for the title of king.
But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod,
he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee.
